Sustainability is a term that aims for human to co-exist on the planet earth over a long period of time,
and are we as humans taking part in this?
We can be noble citizens and can choose to play our vital role to save our planet by showing more
concern towards the environment. Many people have already taken their oath to be a more cautious
citizen by adapting Veganism into their lifestyle. Vegan diets are to be proven as environmental friendly
over the last few years.
Meat, dairy or Greens – Choose the Better
Meat consumed add a significant impact on the environment due to the harmful greenhouse gas
emission release while producing it. Breeding and raising billions of animals take a lot from our
environment ending up in replenishing the natural resources as we consume meat as our daily meals.
But we can end this and can introduce Veganism into our system by eliminating dairy and meat with
plant-based meals. Choosing Meat over plant-based products cause a lot more damage to our
environment.
Water is Precious and is need to be saved.
Veganism helps in conserving water. As 70% of the water resource is used by agriculture in rearing
livestock feed for meat production, water resource is depleting day by day which is an alarming situation
for our planet. It takes 560 gallons of water to create a one quarter pound beef patty which is equal to
taking 23 showers. Switching to a vegan diet will help us to preserve our planet’s fresh water for our
future generations.
Lands and deforestation.
Over one third of landmass of the world is dedicated towards agriculture in raising animals for
consumption. Meat industry take millions of acres of land to rare and graze cattle and for crop
production for animals. This land used for animal grazing leads to deforestation, Whereas Plant-based
meat do not require as much land. If the whole world shifts to a plant-based the percentage of land
saved is an unbelievable number. If people switch to Veganism than deforestation can decline by a great
percentage.
Vegans can reduce energy Consumption
A lot of energy is consumed in producing crops and grazing animals as it takes a lot time to raise them.
Also, meat products have to be shipped and refrigerated and it takes quite some time to process the
meat from the slaughterhouse to a plate. Plant based meat can be raised with a lot less energy, saving
on power and other inputs used in producing meat. Choosing Veganism will eventually reduce energy
consumption.
A healthier option for Human Body
The majority of the nutrients the human body requires come from a plant-based diet. They come from
fresh vegetables, fruits and other vegan staples, and meat cannot provide such nutrients and fibers. All
the protein that comes from meat, can be sourced from peanut butter, beans, lentils, quinoa and much
more. Also, meat is partly responsible for certain human health conditions like cholesterol, cancer as
well as heart diseases. Going vegan will force you to be more active in considering the ingredients that
you will be consuming. Ultimately, a vegan diet is much healthier and will go a long way in helping to
save the environment.
Alternative Measures we can take, to make vegan diet more sustainable are:
Try to plan your meals before as shopping in bulk will save money and will be more reliable to
the environment as there will be less wastage of food.
If you have a lawn or garden, consider composting certain food scraps.
Buy products from eco-friendly sites which make vegan products.
Saving our environment is the need of an hour as our natural resources are on the verge of getting
depleted. Our choices made for a healthy living can give our planet a sigh of relief and a better place for
our future generation. “Go vegan go eco-friendly”
